A Message to Parents
You can help your child get a jump start to literacy by focusing on the elements below during story time.
Precursor or Foundational Literacy Skills
Precursor or foundational literacy skills are those abilities that are highly correlated or predictive of later literacy attainment. These skills can be joyfully and comprehensively transmitted when parents read and speak to their children.
Alphabetic Knowledge
The ability to identify letters of the alphabet in random order.
Phonemic Awareness
Conscious awareness that words are composed of separate sounds and that those sounds can be manipulated to change meaning.
Rapid Naming
The ability to name objects, pictures, colors, symbols, etc. quickly and accurately.
Recall
The ability to remember spoken information and communicate it to others.
